As we are deprived of the wonderful young thai coconuts those darned Californians are always drooling over on Youtube, I was wondering about trying canned or carton coconut water.

It's not going to be quite the business, but better than nothing.

Anyone tried it or good a good supplier?

It's not enlightened enough round here to find it in a shop, so I will have to internet order it

ooh, thanks!
Hey James did you manage to get that link for the young thai coconuts, would love to try some
I know that we can buy raw 'in the carton' coconut milk(contains the juice plus jelly from young green organic coconuts). Not the same but great for some raw dessert recipes. I can't remember the company name at the moment, but you can order it from The Fresh Network.
Thanks, that sounds good.

I tried opening my first brown, fairground style coconut last week! Very little water in it, but I mushed it up in the Blendtec and sqeezed out the milk; it was absolutely delicious but took forever to get the brown skin off the meat first. All the tips on how to get them out of the shell said to heat it before you smash it open, but I didn't want to do that.

So, if anyone has any tips for dealing with brown coconuts in the meantime....................
I prefer young coconuts to the old ones, I find the old ones very easy to open,, I just crack them on the concrete and break them open. The meat I sometime blend in my coffee mill to tiny shreds.

The young coconuts are harder to open but much better for you, you need a mallet or a saw.

I've always had plenty of water from my coconuts, whether young or old, but I shake the old ones first to check for amount of water, if they have been hanging around too long there will be less water.
The easiest way to get the "meat" out of a brown coconut is, put it in the freezer for half an hour. The water in the coconut expands when it freezes and it even cracks the shell for you! If the shell isn't cracked, then giving it a few hits with a hammer does the trick. I usually get the coconut out whole and at that point it is easy to peel the brown skin off with a sharp knife or a potato peeler. Then you can cut it in half and release any water still inside and use as you like. Easy peasy.
i get green coconuts delivered from coconutty, they are full of water but not so much flesh :(

Yes I use those too, I placed the link in the second post.

I also get from another online shop but they are not as good as coconutty and I got two rotten ones last time from the other shop.

Half of them from coconutty had meat in them and the other half didn't but they had plenty of water, I don't see it costs much more to buy them fresh though than to buy a carton of water, and I'm sure the fresh is much better for you.

I wonder if there is anywhere to get fresh or frozen durian online. I can't find a source for that
So if you're a durian lover residing in the UK or Europe and have been limiting yourself to the occasional fix we have great news for you! We have just started selling a freeze-dried durian that is almost too good to be true. So now you can enjoy durian whenever and wherever you want it, for a fraction of the usual price.

might have to order myself some of this
Hi Susan

The Fresh Network no longer sell the freeze dried durian as the supplier stopped importing it. I used to use this one but no one has it for well over a year now, that article is from 2008.

Thanks though.

I'm sure there must be a way of getting durian somehow

There was a thai site selling it fresh online, but they stopped too, due to the bad quality they were getting
:( guess well all just have to take a trip to wherever its growing :D
