Hi

The idea of raw is not a new one to me. I like the sound of it, yummy. I haven’t actually done a lot about it. I know myself, and know that i will have to do it so that I get as much variety as possible. The change will have to include family, as I guess going it alone is going to be difficult. I don't want to alienate them, i wish to include them as much as possible.

I have developed some minor problems health wise, I have had difficulties generally that I did not accept or recognise were health related.

I lost my job due to taking too much time off sick, so financially I cannot afford high priced gadgets.

I don't like to the idea at restricting myself to this or that kind of raw food. Dehydrators and a powerful blender are I guess going to be essential?

I'm also looking for talks to attend in the West Midlands.

Please advise.

Regards

Ray

Hi Ray.

Im not a raw foodie persay (I stumbled across this site last week while looking into something else) but I can vouch for the effectiveness of the Vitamix blender - it has pretty much put most of my other kichen gadgets to waste.

My old blender broke after a few years of good useage from making soups and cocktails so I was in the markets for a new one but in no rush.

While in Costco one day the Vitamix team were in store doing demos on the kit and I was so impressed that I watched it twice (along with getting to try the delicious foods prepared twice too!!). I agree that the price is pretty resrictive but I was lucky enough that my Dad offered to get it myself and my fiance for a joint xmas pressie and we haavent looked back.

Very powerful piece of kit and my old blender went to the tip as soon as I started using the vitamix. Have made all sorts - piping hot soups from veg and cold water in 6 minutes, fresh peanut butter (just stick in the peanuts and let the vitamix eat them up - a couple of tamps and you have smooth fresh peanut butter in 2.5 minutes), Ice cream in 30 seconds!!

Im only in the market for a dehydrator as its one of the few things that the Vitamix cant do and im interested in doing lightweight camping meals and craft projects as well as dehydrating veg and fruit that im not going to get round to using before it goes off. So I would completely agree that you dont need a dehydrator for everyday eating.

Hope this helps
i think i have now managed to get all the equipment, my vitamix is definately the most versitile, if you want juice you can wiz it up in the vitamix and strain it. so you have two in one.

though i hear blendtec is better than vitamix, dont know from experiance.

i use my juicer most days, wish i had someone to do it for me :)

have had a dehydrator since christmas and probably used it about 5 times, theres a new website vivapure, thats selling food made in deyhdrators though they seem to be having probs at the moment keeping up with the stock. probably eating it themselves :D i would :D
just noticed an add/link on the right hand side of the forum front page for vivapure
You can do alot with raw without dehydrators or high powered blenders - my blender is a £20 bush one and I have used it for years with no problems. My food processor cost £25 although i do worry about that on some days when it is getting a hammering

I do have a dehydrator and love what I can do with it but in the meantime you can still get alot out of raw food by aiming for mainly raw - cooking at low temperatures can be done at almost the highest temperature for food to be considered raw

Just increase youraw intake to start with - there is so much that you can do with fruit with a bit of imagination and many of the raw cake bases just need a food processor and strong thumbs

I brought a dehydrator for £120

Juicer, £50

Blender, £90

3 lots of shopping so far, approx £80

I thinks its the initial cost that stung me, I have only used my dehydrator once tho, I tried to make potatoe crisp, but they tasted like rotton farts so I gave up!

hahaha, dont give up on your dehydrator, especially now, dehydrate some mushrooms through the day to have the warm in the evening.

make a nut pate and when your done put the rest in the dehydrator to make into crispy crackers, or dont dehydrate for so long and use them as wraps.

kale chips really are amazing especially when you put a nut cheese on them too.

shred kale, massage in oil till kale goes limp.

mix soaked nuts ( i use cashew), salt and a red pepper

mix with kale and dehydrate.
